New Orleans Cemetery Database--The Historic New Orleans Collection
The New Orleans Cemetery Database is available through the website of the Historic New Orleans Collection and currently contains survey information from the early 1980s for St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and St. Louis Cemetery No. 2. The information provided is what was transcribed from memorial tablets and does not reflect the scope of our interment records. Only names and dates inscribed upon memorialization tablets were recorded and ultimately digitized. Records for the additional seven cemeteries surveyed as part of the earlier project are available to view on microfilm within the Williams Research Center of the Historic New Orleans Collection.

Abjuration Records for Vaults in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, fronting St. Louis Street
Renunciation records exist for some property owners of tombs and vaults within St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in the area that St. Louis Street cut through. These records span 1847 to 1850 and were filed with the City of New Orleans so that they could proceed with the street project. The files indicate what property owners gave up their right of ownership over a tomb or plot to the City of New Orleans for the road project to take place. That area of the cemetery was later demolished and St. Louis Street was extended from the French Quarter into the Treme, cutting through land that was previously part of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Digital copies are available on-line through www.familysearch.org, a free genealogical record site. The original copies are held by the City Archives & Special Collections of the New Orleans Public Library.

Works Progress Administration Tombstone Index
In the 1930s the WPA collected data from 28 local New Orleans cemeteries. The data includes a mixture of memorialization tablet inscription transcriptions and information gleaned from interment books. Norm Helmers gives a thorough explanation of what is included in this on-line article: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/orleans/cemeteries/info/00000022.txt
The original index is housed in the Donald M. Marquis Reading Room, which is located on the second floor of the New Orleans Jazz Museum in the Old U.S. Mint building at 400 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans. Microfilm copies of the index are housed at the City Archives & Special Collections of the New Orleans Public Library and have since been digitized and made available for free on FamilySearch.org by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and parts of St. Louis Cemetery No. 2
In an effort to locate the burial places of patriots of the American Revolution, Piercy J. Stakelum, Jr, member of the George Washington Chapter, SAR and his wife, Shirley V. Stakelum, member of the New Orleans Chapter, DAR, set out on a project to locate the tombs of patriots whose graves could be marked.
They started with St. Louis Cemeteries Nos. 1 and 2, as these would be likely places to start because of the age of the cemeteries. They planned to return to the cemeteries and finish the survey in 1999, but unfortunately, Mr. Stakelum died in January 1999. Shirley assembled what they had. It was later indexed by Katherine Chamberlain, DAR.
